    Amazing compact layout! The rock work and waterfall are awesome, nice details. Favorite part though, the way the tunnels transition, they look so natural and believable great idea.

      You have to check the concrete mountain video on my channel. Basically, my tunnels are hollow with Chicken wire, covered in shade cloth strips dipped in concrete. On one small tunnel I used concrete backer board to make the tunnel. Still standing after 10 years.

      I believe it was up to 8, but the power supply would have to be able to handle that many Amps. I sold this years ago, and have been using Digitrax DCC for a long time. This was the LGB first MTS system from the 1990s.

    I watch this but from the angle shown I was not sure if you were lining up the wood strip on the upper edge of the first row groove or trying to eye ball it on the center of the groove burned in. Just a scale thing on the block one way or the other.

    • @mjmtrains
      @mjmtrains 5 років тому

      I line up the wood strip at the top of the previous row groove. You could do it on the bottom or center of the groove. The main thing is to keep the rows consistent in height.

    This is a great idea! Certainly easier than pouring them out with concrete or carving them out of wood. I can see quite a few uses for this on my own layout. One question: After you rough up the foam with the wire brush, what grain of sandpaper do you normally use? I imagine fairly course.

    • @mjmtrains
      @mjmtrains 8 років тому

      I used medium, 100 grit I think. It was lightly sanded just to knock off any sharp edges, or cling-ons.

I see this dates back to 2013 but the info is timeless. My wife, in profile photo, knows how much work a layout is. She has helped. She does her "O" and me my big gear.

    This is really well done! A nice alternative to buying the pre-set portals if you have scrap foam lying around. Though a smaller soldering iron may be considered if one wanted to do this in a smaller scale, like HO.

    • @mjmmusicgroup
      @mjmmusicgroup 8 років тому

      +icverano525 Thanks, a 4 x 8 sheet is much less than buying one pre-made, and yields a lot of portals and walls. But scrap is always free, lol. I have friends that have used this technique in HO with a smaller heated tip.

    • @mjmtrains
      @mjmtrains 8 років тому

      +Dunbar SteelDragon I'm up north in the summer, but the track floats in ballast. The rails are screwed together using rail clamps or Aristocraft rail joiners with screws. As long as you don't screw the track down, it's fine

    can this be exposed to water features or can be used under the water?

    • @mjmtrains
      @mjmtrains 8 років тому

      +Distant Traveler I have used the same method for a water feature. In that case, I used a couple cans of that "flex-seal" spray. Rust Oleum makes several colors, but then I over-coated with Latex exterior paint. I assume a couple good coats of latex exterior alone would probably be enough for years. in this video, you can see my stream and pond. ua-cam.com/video/hnMujqUBEzw/v-deo.html
